Buying a utility trailer. Any registration issues to watch out for?

So I'm going to buy a small 4x8 utility trailer. I'm planning on either buying one of the ones from harbor freight tools for $300, or buying a used one from a private party

I know there is some registration involved, and that they have to pass state patrol standards, and that I need plates/tabs, etc.

I have very little money to spend, so I'm worried about possibly buying a trailer, and then it costing a fortune to register.

So what steps do I need to go through with a private seller to ensure I can transfer it into my name without having to have it inspected, or jump through any other hoops?

Also, what about the brand new ones from harbor freight? If I buy one of those, can I simply pay a few bucks to get the license plate/tabs, or does it have to go through an inspection too?

I live in washington.

The trailers sold at Harbor Freight come with a Manufacturers Certificate of Origin. You take that and your receipt, and bill of sale to your DMV office, and apply for title and tags. If you buy a used trailer, make sure that it comes with a title!

Most states do not require a new trailer to be inspected, but this is not true of all. Many will require a used trailer to be inspected! Check with the DMV (or equivalent) in your state for the exact requirements!
